Modern technology in the office has made an enormous difference to how we manage our work. Several years ago, as computers in the workplace became more and more common, we started to hear rumours that secretaries and PAs were going to become a thing of the past.
Whilst it may be true that technology has reduced the time taken to actually do our work, even now, in the 21st century office, it certainly hasn’t taken over completely. And nor will it do so.
Today, although managers are able to do a lot of their own work (answering emails, typing reports) it appears that there are almost as many PAs, in businesses large and small, as there were 25 years ago.
PA training in IT skills has helped PAs manage their time and their workloads to become much more efficient. PA training workshops in presenting, project management, supervising staff and running events has also helped to PAs to stay one step ahead, and to become an Assistant in the true sense of the word.
However, it is important that PA training in such skills is run by PAs for PAs. That way, PAs and EAs will get the best of out of their training courses and workshops – knowing it is aimed at, and tailored to, their needs.
Whatever the shape of the future office, the demise of the PA (and therefore PA training) has been greatly exaggerated!
