PA Training and the Art of Delegation

Delegation is an art form. As PAs, we’ve all come across those who are masters of the art – and those who could do with a little help.  Attending a PA course in the subject will help you to avoid becoming one of the latter.

Training of this sort can either form part of a Managerial or Supervisor training course or it can form part of your overall PA training.  Whichever course you choose, you will learn to look at:

  • The reasons why you’re delegating the work.
  • The importance of clear instructions.
  • Why it’s important to explain the context of the work.
  • Ways to manage and motivate the person carrying out the work.
  • How to keep up to date with progress – without interfering!

The techniques you learn from your course will help you in any role, not just as a supervisor, manager or a mentor but also as a valuable team member within your department.

Training course in delegation is about more than just learning how to delegate the work.  It’s about encouraging others (i.e., your boss) to delegate work to you.

You may be lucky enough to have a boss who is already great at this: delegating interesting projects and tasks to you on a regular basis.  On the other hand, you may work for someone who adopts the “quicker-to-do-the-work-myself” approach. In this case, your training will be invaluable in helping you encourage your boss to let you become involved in more exciting and appealing work.

Such workshop could include:

  • How to show your boss that you are interested in a particular project.
  • How to encourage your boss to provide clear instructions to help you do the work.
  • How to keep your boss up to date with progress before they ask – so you always appear one step ahead!

Taking a course and learning how to delegate – as well as how to accept and deliver delegated work – will help you become an Assistant in the true sense of the word.
