PAs and EAs rely on a range of skills to carry out their day-to-day work. The popularity of PA training in subjects such as project management, staff supervision and presenting show the breadth of skills and knowledge PAs need in today’s work environment.
So it’s easy to think that the traditional secretarial skills of shorthand and typing are somewhat ‘old fashioned’. Nothing could be further from the truth.
PA training courses in keyboard skills are as popular as ever and many job descriptions for top jobs still state that shorthand is “desirable”, if not “essential”.
For instance, if you take a PA training course in IT or Report Writing, you will be relying heavily on good keyboard skills. Although your laptop is a world away from that noisy manual typewriter, being able to reply to emails and deal with daily correspondence, quickly and efficiently, requires fast and accurate typing speeds.
It seems that however much the working environment changes, the old traditional secretarial skills are still very much to the fore.
