New Year (Training) Resolutions

Have you made your New Year’s Resolution yet?  If not, why not make one right now – to make the most of as many training opportunities as possible during 2017.

We all know the importance of focussed, up-to-date PA training, both in our current role and for our personal and professional development.  So it makes sense to take advantage of any training on offer.

However, with so many PA training courses to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you?

First of all, you will need to take a look at the type of training you need:

  • Is it for a particular task/part of your role? (minute-writing, project management, event management)
  • Is it to update/refresh/acquire new IT skills? (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Or is it to gain an increased insight into your PA role? (Today’s PA training workshop)

Next, find out about your company’s training policy.  There may be a programme for ongoing PA training or recommended courses for specific skills.   Also, talk to your PA colleagues (or networking group) to find out what courses they have taken.

Research, research, research!  Take the time for find out which course suits your training requirements.  Remember to look at the frequency, duration and location of your chosen course.

Once you have all the facts at your fingertips, you’re ready to make the case to your manager.

Outline the benefits the training will have on your day-to-day work (save time, manage workload, streamline systems).  And don’t forget to reiterate the effect the course will have on you: a boost to your own self-worth and a greater confidence in your role – which is, of course, to support your boss!

It’s a win-win situation.
